Beyond the Numbers

In a recent survey done by Financial Planning Canada, they asked people what their #1 stressor was…can you guess what it was? Money! 40% of the respondents…followed by personal health (23%), work (16%) and relationships (17%). The good news is that across the board, people felt more confident in their financial future and lost less sleep if they were working with a financial planner. Everyone reading this can give themselves a pat on the back.

Feeling less stress and getting better sleep, those are definite advantages to your longevity. Sleep is actually linked to a longer life and a host of other benefits to your body. When you are sleeping, your body is repairing itself, growth hormones are released, your brain is cleansing itself and preparing for the day ahead. Deprive yourself of sleep for just one day and you'll notice a massive difference in your mood, creativity, social skills, and decision making.

Everyone has heard the age-old wisdom of getting 7-8 hours of sleep but don't forget that a consistent schedule is also important. Our bodies are creatures of habit and there are many cycles to our sleep – light, deep, REM. Disrupt these cycles with varying bedtimes or a few alcoholic cocktails right before bed and your quality of sleep rapidly declines.

Andrew Huberman of Stanford Medicine had this to say about the benefits of getting 7-8 hours of sleep:

Best nootropic (cognitive enhancer): sleep

Best stress relief: sleep

Best immune booster: sleep

Best emotional stabilizer: sleep

Best trauma release: sleep
