The Playbook or The Highlight Reel?
Michael Asadoorian - Sep 05, 2025
The NFL season kicks off this week so here’s a fun fact: NFL teams spend five to six days every week preparing for a game that lasts just about three hours. Hours of film study, walkthroughs, conditioning… all for those fleeting moments on Sunday (we know there are games on Thursday and Monday too). Why? Because the outcome is uncertain, but the process—the preparation—is theirs to own.
That’s what stuck with us watching Sean McDermott on the Hard Knocks Buffalo Bills Edition. He didn’t toss a binder of “rules” at his players. Instead, he talked about how to go about your business. Expectations. Mindset. Accountability. In other words: a culture.
Now, let’s bring this back to money.
The Process vs. The Scoreboard
Financial planning works the same way. The stock market? That’s the scoreboard—we can’t dictate it. What we can dictate are the behaviors, the habits, the small choices repeated over time.
- Are you willing to save consistently, even when it’s inconvenient?
- Will you stick to the plan, even when the market feels like a fourth-quarter blitz?
- Can you resist chasing the “hot play” (looking at you, meme stocks) in favor of steady execution?
Like Josh Allen doesn’t just rely on his cannon arm—he trains, studies defenses, and listens to coaching—you won’t reach your financial goals on talent or luck alone. It’s about the process. Your “financial playbook” only works if you actually run the plays.
A New Playbook in Retirement
For NFL veterans, the game eventually slows down, and their role shifts. Some become mentors in the locker room, guiding rookies. Others use their platform to make an impact off the field. The point is, the work doesn’t end—it just takes a new form.
Retirement works the same way. You’ve already put in the decades of “practice” and “game days.” Now it’s less about sacrificing for the future and more about deciding how to use your financial freedom with intention.
Maybe it’s enjoying travel you never had time for, mentoring the next generation in your family or community, or simply finding purpose in new passions.
And just like an NFL coach ensures the playbook evolves with the team, we are here to help adjust your plan so it supports this next chapter—where joy, purpose, and legacy take center stage.
