Say Hi to Sydney Samantha

Michael Asadoorian - Nov 14, 2025

Michael, Danielle and Elyse are overjoyed to share that Sydney Samantha Asadoorian has arrived safely—and already holds a special place in all of their hearts. Her middle name, Samantha, is a tribute to his sister-in-law, who carried Sydney as their surrogate. It’s a gesture that goes beyond generosity—reminding us that there are truly selfless people in this world.

Elyse Learns the Economics of Being a Big Sister

Michael's older daughter, Elyse, is adjusting to her new role. And let’s just say, when Sydney receives a gift, Elyse’s reaction is swift: “Where’s mine?”

Welcome to the earliest form of delayed gratification—a concept she’ll be mastering over the coming years. It’s uncomfortable, sure. But necessary. And it reminds us that money lessons don’t start with bank accounts—they start in the living room, at the dinner table, and yes, during those slightly unfair gift exchanges.

When Life Changes, So Should the Plan

New baby? New behaviours (naps are back - for Sydney and for Michael). New financial game plan. There are a few critical to-dos that are easy to overlook in the fog of diapers and too much coffee:

  • Add your newborn to your workplace benefits plan (usually within 30 days—set a reminder)
  • Open or update a Family RESP to start earning those sweet 20% CESG contributions
  • Review life & disability insurance coverage—you’ve got one more reason to be protected
  • Revisit your emergency fund—babies come with expenses (and surprises)
  • Update your will to include guardianship and asset distribution
  • Plan for childcare costs, even if it feels light-years away

These aren’t just financial decisions—they’re acts of love and foresight. Behaviour shifts are part of this new chapter too. Our routines, priorities, and even sleep patterns (what are those?) all change. And as parents, it's our job to adapt—and prepare. Be present but keep an eye on the future.
